Vision

Inequitable and oppressive systems and institutions are operating exactly as they were designed. This means we can imagine and rebuild human-centered systems in which everyone can thrive, heal, grow, and play.

I believe that by bringing together the voices and imaginations of community members who are most deeply impacted by inequities we can dream and design a world where there are more positive outcomes for all.

Approach

I work with individuals and organizations that are dreaming and building toward a future of liberation for all.

No matter where you are in this journey, through deep collaboration, coaching, and a community-first alignment, we can work together to imagine new norms, programs, and institutions that center those most deeply impacted by inequities.

Hello! My name is Marlo Barrera (they/them/theirs) and I am a Liberatory Design Strategist, Facilitator, and Healing Centered Coach.

A queer, nonbinary, Latinx person and native New Orleanian with a background in movement work from education justice to reproductive justice, I am passionate about centering community care, and the community-first redesign of systems and institutions.

I founded The Reproductive Justice Action Collective (ReJAC) where I led and facilitated the community-first design and launch of Plan B NOLA which provides free emergency contraception and gender-neutral sex ed to the greater New Orleans area through a city-wide network of Community Support Members.

As the Director of Programs at 4.0 Schools I designed, launched, and managed fellowships for people doing community-centered education work around the country. There I had the opportunity to work with hundreds of founders across the country to create pilots of their ideas with their communities. I have coached people across the country, raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in funds, designed volunteer programs, and more. Currently, I sit on the board of the National Network of Abortion Funds, am a session designer and facilitator for Conscious Roots, and a facilitator for OneTILT

I have had the privilege to design and run sessions that focus on a range of topics including economic justice, abortion funding in the south, skill shares, affinity groups, and sessions to cultivate and nurture community care networks in the reproductive rights and justice movements across the Gulf South. I have presented at conferences including the Civil Liberties and Public Policy annual conference, and the International Family Planning Conference in Kigali, Rwanda.
